Traditional advocacy discourse tends to highlight physical and economic benefits while neglecting more subtle social mechanisms – like cycling’s ability to empower marginalized groups or accelerate higher density urban development – in terms of benefits to society as a whole. This study intends to bridge that gap by using social representation theory (SRT) as an overarching framework and expanding previous research on cycling SRs as an overarching framework – in doing so we hope to challenge widespread perceptions of cycling novelty while seeing it as an important way toward sustainable urban mobility solutions.
